Our family, with cousins from New Hampshire and Connecticut, just spent a memory-making week together at this amazing home and adjacent detached apartment. The photos, while lovely, do not come close to revealing this home’s many virtues. It is incredibly spacious, exquisitely decorated, and exudes warmth. And, you cannot imagine how gorgeous the setting is, whether rainy, misty, or sunny. (We arrived to a rainbow and fresh-baked scones!) The main home, which was a gamekeeper’s cottage, has its 1800’s charm with the most up-to-date amenities, and the addition is seamless. There is a beautiful living/dining room with fireplace, which opens on to a large patio. (Those of us over thirty dined outside when it wasn’t raining and the younger ones inside 🙂 The cows were right there in the field and it lent a spirit of true Ireland to our stay…plus a local cuddly, cute kitty that hung around who we think is really Professor McGonegal! Her ability to apparate into the house despite closed doors was Harry Potter-esque. There is a wonderful fully-equipped kitchen, five lovely, comfortable bedrooms, washer dryer, and separate game room with pool table/air hockey. The apartment is really it’s own self-sustaining cottage and just as terrific. Add to the above physical description, the most lovely owner, Fiona, and you have the makings for a perfect holiday. Even with my cousin’s previous visits and family in the area, she added so many wonderful ideas and was there for anything we needed…which really was minimal since she had already thought of it! This was a gathering of fourteen of us from the States, visiting our amazing Monaghan family so we will be back. Loved, loved, loved Lake Muckno Lodge as our home away from home.
